In the winter of 2020, a dispute in Natchez, Mississippi, ended in the tragic death of 22-year-old Bralon James. On the evening of December 17th, in the vicinity of Minor Street and Brenham Avenue, what began as a disagreement and physical altercation escalated to fatal violence. James was shot and killed, leaving the community seeking answers and justice.
The investigation that followed led to the apprehension of three individuals connected to the incident.
Shortly after the shooting, Reginald Butler turned himself in to the Natchez Police Department and was subsequently charged with murder. Two other men were also arrested in connection with the events of that night: Tyran Jabari Newman faced a charge of aggravated assault, and Eliegrel Quartez White was charged with aggravated assault as well as illegal possession of a controlled substance. Investigators believe a disagreement that turned into a physical fight between the suspects and James was the precursor to the deadly shooting.
The legal proceedings for Reginald Butler have been drawn out, with his attorney filing a motion to dismiss the case due to a lack of a speedy trial, a motion that was ultimately denied by a judge. The core of Butler's defense rests on a claim of self-defense. His attorney has argued that Bralon James had been pursuing another individual over a debt and when Butler intervened, James pointed a gun at him, prompting Butler to fire in self-preservation. This claim is contested by the prosecution, which has pointed out that James was shot in the back and that the only shell casings recovered from the scene were from the weapon fired by Butler. Despite the defense's assertion, a grand jury indicted Butler for murder, and he remains in custody awaiting trial.
