In the late hours of a Friday night in Natchez, Mississippi, a domestic dispute tragically escalated, claiming the life of 31-year-old Troy Whittington, a male volunteer fire chief. On March 1, 2019, Whittington and a fellow firefighter, Jason Haley, were at a friend's home on Quasar Street after attending a local Mardi Gras parade. They were accompanying a woman and her children when her estranged husband, Jonathan Beach, arrived and attempted to force his way into the residence.
Earlier in the evening, deputies had been called to the home twice. The first time was in response to the discovery of deer cameras that Beach had allegedly installed to monitor his estranged wife and children. Less than an hour later, a second call was made reporting that Beach was trying to get into the house. Whittington and Haley, who were both armed, positioned themselves between Beach and his family, who were safely locked in a back bedroom, while they awaited the arrival of law enforcement.
An armed confrontation ensued when Beach managed to enter the home. Gunfire was exchanged, and both Whittington and Haley were fatally wounded. Before succumbing to his injuries, Haley was able to return fire, striking Beach and causing a non-life-threatening injury. Whittington did not discharge his weapon. The woman and children who were being protected were unharmed.
Law enforcement officers found Beach wandering away from the scene, covered in blood and still in possession of a firearm. He was promptly arrested and subsequently charged with two counts of murder. At the time of the incident, Beach was being held without bond. Troy Whittington was remembered as a dedicated community servant, having volunteered as a firefighter for 16 years and serving as the chief for the Lake Montrose Volunteer Fire Department.
