In a tragic turn of events following a local Mardi Gras parade, 34-year-old Jason Haley, a male volunteer firefighter, was shot and killed in Natchez, Mississippi. The incident, which also claimed the life of his friend and fellow volunteer firefighter Troy Whittington, unfolded on the night of March 1, 2019. Haley and Whittington were at a friend's home on Quasar Street when the estranged husband of the woman living there, Jonathan Beach, arrived and attempted to force his way inside.
Earlier in the evening, sheriff's deputies had been called to the residence concerning deer cameras Beach had allegedly set up to surveil his estranged wife. A second 911 call was made when Beach returned to the home. Inside, Haley and Whittington armed themselves in an attempt to protect the woman and her children, who were locked in a back bedroom. When Beach entered the house, an exchange of gunfire occurred. Both Haley and Whittington were fatally shot. Before succumbing to his injuries, Haley was able to fire his own weapon, wounding Beach.
Jonathan Beach, then 36, was apprehended by deputies as he was leaving the scene, covered in blood and still armed. He was subsequently arrested and charged with two counts of murder. Beach sustained a non-life-threatening gunshot wound during the incident and was hospitalized before being transferred back to Adams County for questioning.
The case against Jonathan Beach went to trial, where he claimed he acted in self-defense. The defense argued that the confrontation was instigated by Beach's ex-wife. In May 2021, after two years of being held on a $2 million bond, an Adams County jury found Jonathan Beach not guilty on all charges, and he was released from custody.
