In the early days of 2022, a violent encounter in Natchez, Mississippi, tragically cut short the life of Johnny Ricardo Mason, a 33-year-old male. On January 4th, police were called to the Holiday Apartments where they discovered Mason on the ground, suffering from a gunshot wound. Before succumbing to his injuries, Mason was able to identify his assailant to the officers who had arrived on the scene.
He named Michael Thomas, also known by the nickname 'Traedo,' as the man who had shot him in the lower abdomen. The shooting had unfolded in a public space, with several people, including children, nearby to witness the harrowing event.
Immediately following the shooting, a manhunt was initiated by the Natchez Police Department and the Adams County Sheriff's Office to locate Michael Thomas, who had fled the area. For 24 hours, law enforcement searched for the man Mason had accused with his dying breath. The search concluded when Thomas voluntarily surrendered to the Adams County Sheriff's Office. This brought an end to the immediate search but marked the beginning of the legal proceedings to bring justice for the death of Johnny Ricardo Mason.
Michael Thomas, who was 28 years old at the time of the offense and had a known criminal history, was brought to face the consequences of his actions. His past included a five-year sentence for aggravated assault, of which he served three years, and a more recent arrest for the alleged kidnapping of his girlfriend at gunpoint, though those charges were dropped. In connection with Mason's death, Thomas ultimately pleaded guilty to a charge of second-degree homicide. Following his guilty plea in the summer of 2024, the district attorney recommended a substantial sentence of 40 years in prison. A judge ordered a pre-sentencing investigation, and the final sentencing was scheduled for the end of June of that year in the Adams County Circuit Court.
