In the early morning hours of May 15, 2017, a tragedy unfolded in Natchez, Mississippi, that would leave a family shattered and a community searching for answers. Kelvin Sadler, a 32-year-old male, was asleep in his bed when an intruder forced their way into his home through a window. The sanctity of his home was violated in the most brutal way as the intruder fired several shots, one of which struck Kelvin in the head.
The assailant then made a hasty retreat, exiting through the back kitchen door, leaving behind a scene of violence and a life cut short. It was Kelvin's own mother who made the horrific discovery, finding her son unresponsive and immediately calling for help. But it was too late; Kelvin Sadler was pronounced dead at the scene.
The investigation into Kelvin's murder led authorities to a 19-year-old man named Kiandas Washington in February 2018. Washington was already in custody for another crime when the firearm recovered from him was linked to the weapon used to end Kelvin Sadler's life. The evidence against Washington appeared to be substantial. He was charged with murder, and the prosecution built a case that included the ballistic match of the firearm. As the legal proceedings unfolded, more incriminating evidence came to light. A note, allegedly in Washington's handwriting, was discovered. In this note, he reportedly asked his girlfriend to provide him with an alibi for the night of the murder. This piece of evidence seemed to further solidify the case against him.
Despite what law enforcement, including Adams County Sheriff Travis Patten, considered a 'slam dunk case,' the trial of Kiandas Washington for the murder of Kelvin Sadler reached a conclusion that stunned many. Washington took the stand in his own defense and admitted that the gun used in the killing was his and that he had dropped it while fleeing from the police. However, in June 2021, a jury of his peers, consisting of four men and eight women, returned a unanimous verdict of not guilty. The acquittal of Kiandas Washington in the murder of Kelvin Sadler left the local law enforcement community disheartened and the case officially unresolved. While Washington was acquitted of this particular crime, he remained incarcerated, serving a 20-year sentence for his involvement in a separate shooting spree that had terrorized the streets of Natchez in October 2017.
