In the cool evening of February 17, 2022, the life of 16-year-old Marquez 'Snug' Brown, a Black male, was tragically cut short by gunfire in his hometown of Natchez, Mississippi. Around 7 p.m., police responded to a 'shots fired' call near the intersection of Martin Luther King Jr. and Jackson streets. Upon their arrival, they discovered the young man's body at the scene.
Marquez was a student at Natchez Freshman Academy, where he was remembered by his principal as a happy teen who was always willing to help and loved to laugh. His death marked a devastating loss for his family and the community, a pain amplified by the fact that his older brother had also been a victim of street violence.
The investigation into the shooting quickly led authorities to a suspect. Jordan Caston, an 18-year-old, was taken into custody and subsequently charged with murder and shooting inside city limits. The Natchez Police Chief described the act as a 'cold-blooded' killing. While a definitive motive was not immediately released to the public, investigators were exploring a possible connection to the recent lengthy prison sentence of a man named Montreal Brown for a separate second-degree murder and aggravated assault case. However, it was not confirmed if this played a role in the shooting death of Marquez.
While awaiting legal proceedings for the murder charge, Jordan Caston faced further legal trouble. In April 2022, while incarcerated at the Adams County Jail, he was accused of intentionally starting a fire. Authorities reported that Caston tore wires from a kiosk in his holding area, using the sparks to ignite toilet paper, which he then allegedly used to set his clothing and blankets ablaze. This incident resulted in the third floor of the jail filling with smoke and led to an additional charge of fourth-degree arson against him. The community continues to mourn the loss of a young life as the legal process against the accused unfolds.
