With a decade of service to his community, Sergeant Burks was a respected figure, known for his commitment and bravery. He also served as a Special Narcotics Agent, further highlighting his dedication to law enforcement.
On April 6, 1978, Sergeant Burks responded to a volatile domestic dispute.
A man, armed and intent on violence, was seeking to shoot another individual who had reportedly slapped his wife. Sergeant Burks, in his capacity as a peacekeeper, attempted to de-escalate the volatile situation by negotiating with the armed man. Despite his efforts to find a peaceful resolution, the situation escalated, and the suspect opened fire, mortally wounding the sergeant.
In his final moments, demonstrating immense courage, Sergeant Burks managed to return fire, striking and killing the man who had shot him. His actions on that day prevented further bloodshed. The suspect was killed at the scene, and as he was the sole perpetrator, no other arrests were made in connection with the incident. Sergeant Burks was survived by his wife and two children, leaving behind a family to mourn the loss of a devoted husband and father.
