Sergeant Daniel Ray Burks, a dedicated officer with the Natchez Police Department in Mississippi, tragically lost his life on April 6, 1978, at the age of 33. On that fateful day, Sergeant Burks was attempting to negotiate with an armed man who intended to shoot another individual who had slapped his wife. Despite his efforts to de-escalate the situation, Sergeant Burks was shot and mortally wounded. In his final moments, he managed to return fire, ultimately killing the suspect.
