Sixteen-year-old Cameron Jakel Jones and his 18-year-old girlfriend, Jamesia Brown, were together in a parked car in Natchez, Mississippi, during the early hours of May 1, 2020. The car was outside Jamesia’s home at the Kenny Graves Apartments on Graves Avenue. Cameron was a Black male who, along with Jamesia, would not survive the night.
Around 2 a.m., the Adams County Sheriff's Office responded to reports of shots fired in the area.
When deputies arrived, they found the two teenagers inside the vehicle, both suffering from gunshot wounds. Jamesia was pronounced dead at the scene from a wound to her chest. Emergency responders transported Cameron to Merit Health, but he passed away shortly after arriving. An autopsy later confirmed he died from a gunshot wound to the head. An official with the sheriff's office stated there was no sign of a confrontation, saying, "they just apparently came up behind them and shot them."
In the wake of the double homicide, Cameron’s mother, Pallice Vicks, pleaded for justice for her son and his girlfriend. The Adams County Sheriff’s Office launched an investigation, but early on, investigators announced they had exhausted all their leads and urged the public to come forward with information. The case remained a priority, and in August 2021, a $5,000 reward was offered for any information that could lead to more arrests.
A significant breakthrough came with the arrest of Semaj Jackson in connection with the murders. At the time of the arrest, investigators stated their belief that Jackson was not the only person involved in the shooting and that they were seeking additional suspects.
In February 2022, Semaj Jackson pleaded guilty to two counts of second-degree murder for the deaths of Cameron Jones and Jamesia Brown. He received two concurrent 40-year prison sentences. With Jackson's conviction, the case was officially considered solved as of February 2022.
