Man pleads to lesser charge in fatal shooting - The Natchez Democrat NATCHEZ — An Adams County man pleaded guilty to manslaughter Tuesday in the 2014 shooting death of Terrance Thornburg. Jordan Caston, 21, was originally indicted on a murder charge for the shooting, but entered a guilty plea to the lesser included offense of manslaughter. Caston was sentenced to 20 years in the Mississippi Department of Corrections for the crime. Circuit Court Judge Forrest “Al” Johnson suspended the sentence to 15 years, with five years of post-release supervision. Caston must serve the full 15 years. Thornburg, 20, was found dead in his St. Catherine Street home Feb. 23, 2014, of a gunshot wound to the back of the head. Thornburg’s parents, Brenda and Dwight Thornburg, addressed the court before Caston’s sentencing. Brenda said she would never get to see her son get married or have more children. His father, Dwight, said he has had to go to counseling and has anxiety and sleepless nights. Thornburg was a Natchez High School graduate. District Attorney Ronnie Harper said after the fact that the state has to be able to prove murder beyond a reasonable doubt, and that the state had a witness who gave conflicting statements about the shooting. The witness reportedly told law enforcement investigators two different versions of the shooting, Harper said. “ told one story, and then it changed and was totally different,” he said. Harper said he met with the family before the plea, and they were ready for closure. “It was a difficult case, and in all candor, it could have gone either way in front of a jury,” Harper said. “The family is the one that is the victim, and they were satisfied with the plea.” ...
