In the summer of 2017, the life of 20-year-old Deion I. Kennedy was cut short in a violent encounter in Louisville, Kentucky. On the evening of August 5th, Kennedy was found inside his car in the parking lot of a Walmart on Outer Loop, having sustained fatal gunshot wounds. Witnesses at the scene reported hearing the sound of several gunshots ring out at approximately 7:30 p.m.
Kennedy, a former football player at Eastern High School and a member of the Canaan Church, was a young man
whose family remembered him as someone who was beginning to seek his faith. In the wake of his death, his family expressed a desire to create a scholarship in his memory, hoping to foster positive change from their tragic loss. He was survived by his mother, stepfather, and nine siblings.
The investigation into the shooting revealed a complex and ultimately tragic story. Authorities determined that Kennedy, accompanied by a woman named Taylor Bailey, had gone to the Walmart parking lot with the intention of selling a handgun. However, the transaction was a ruse for a planned robbery by Kennedy. During the attempted robbery, the intended victim shot Kennedy. The police concluded that the shooter had acted in self-defense, and consequently, no charges were filed against them.
Seven months after the fatal shooting, the investigation led to the arrest of Taylor Bailey. She was taken into custody and charged with murder and robbery for her role as an accomplice in the events that led to Deion Kennedy's death. Following her arrest, Bailey entered a plea of not guilty at her arraignment.
