William Berry Freeman, a 41-year-old white male, served as the Town Marshal in Donalsonville, Georgia. On February 25, 1901, he was fatally shot while attempting to arrest a man for violating a town ordinance. The incident occurred when the suspect, who had been evading arrest for four months, opened fire with a shotgun, striking Marshal Freeman in the head. The suspect also shot and wounded another man who had accompanied Marshal Freeman during the arrest attempt.
