In the late summer of 1986, the community of Donalsonville, Georgia, was shaken by the death of one of its own. Deputy Sheriff Robert Cunningham, Jr., a 51-year-old male officer with the Seminole County Sheriff's Office, was killed in the line of duty on Wednesday, August 27, 1986.
The fatal encounter occurred during what began as a routine traffic stop. Deputy Cunningham had pulled over a vehicle when a struggle ensued between him and the suspect. In the course of the altercation, the suspect produced a firearm and tragically shot Deputy Cunningham. The incident cut short the life of a dedicated public servant, leaving behind his wife and a grieving community.
Following the shooting, an investigation was launched to bring the person responsible to justice. The suspect was subsequently identified, apprehended, and charged with the murder of Deputy Cunningham. After a trial, the individual was convicted of the crime. In a final chapter to the case, the convicted murderer was sentenced to death for the killing of the law enforcement officer.
