In the quiet farming community of Donalsonville, Georgia, a horrific crime shattered the peace on May 14, 1973, resulting in the death of Chester Alday, a 32-year-old male, along with five of his family members. The day began like any other for the Alday family, but a chance encounter with four escaped prisoners from Maryland set in motion a tragic chain of events. The perpetrators, Carl Junior Isaacs, his half-brother Wayne Carl Coleman, George Elder Dungee, and Carl's younger brother, 15-year-old William 'Billy' Isaacs, were passing through Georgia when they decided to burglarize the mobile home of Jerry and Mary Alday.
As members of the Alday family returned to the home throughout the day, they were met by the armed fugitives. Chester Alday, along with his uncle Aubrey Alday, arrived at the trailer in a pickup truck. The two men were forced inside at gunpoint. Chester was then taken into a bathroom and murdered by Wayne Coleman. In a brutal sequence of events, five other family members were also shot and killed: Jerry Alday, 35; Ned Alday, 62; Jimmy Alday, 25; Aubrey Alday, 57; and Jerry's wife, Mary Alday, 26, who was also raped.
The investigation quickly led to the four suspects after a stolen car they had used was found near the Alday home. An all-points bulletin was issued, and the men were apprehended in West Virginia five days after the murders. In their possession were weapons linked to the killings and personal items belonging to the victims. The four were extradited to Georgia to face charges for the murders.
The legal proceedings that followed were lengthy and complex. In 1974, Carl Isaacs, Wayne Coleman, and George Dungee were convicted and sentenced to death. Billy Isaacs, in exchange for his testimony against the others, received a 40-year sentence for lesser charges. However, in 1985, the convictions were overturned by a federal appeals court due to excessive pretrial publicity that was deemed to have compromised the fairness of the trials.
Retrials in 1988 resulted in Carl Isaacs once again receiving the death penalty. Wayne Coleman was also reconvicted, but the jury was deadlocked on the death penalty, resulting in six consecutive life sentences. Prosecutors chose not to retry George Dungee for the death penalty due to a new law regarding intellectual disability, and he was also given six consecutive life sentences. Carl Isaacs was executed by lethal injection in May 2003, three decades after the murders. George Dungee died in prison in 2006, and Billy Isaacs, who was paroled, died in 2009. Wayne Coleman remains incarcerated.
