On a tragic day in May of 1973, the quiet farming community of Donalsonville, Georgia, was shattered by a crime of unimaginable brutality. Ned Alday, a 62-year-old man, was killed along with five members of his family on his own property. This horrific event unfolded when a group of prison escapees from Maryland happened upon the Alday farm.
Earlier, Carl Isaacs, his half-brother Wayne Coleman, and George Dungee had broken out of a Maryland prison and were joined by Carl's younger brother, 15-year-old Billy Isaacs. While heading to Florida, they stopped at the Alday property, intending to burglarize a mobile home belonging to Ned's son, Jerry Alday. As the Alday men returned from their work on the farm, they walked into a deadly ambush.
Ned, his brother Aubrey, and his sons Jerry, Jimmy, and Chester were systematically executed by the intruders. They were forced to lie down before being shot in the head. Jerry's wife, Mary, was also murdered after being sexually assaulted. Her body was later discovered in a nearby field.
The four suspects fled the scene but were apprehended in West Virginia just five days after the murders. The subsequent legal proceedings were lengthy and complex. Carl Isaacs, Wayne Coleman, and George Dungee were initially sentenced to death. However, due to legal challenges and retrials that spanned decades, the sentences for Coleman and Dungee were eventually commuted to life in prison. Billy Isaacs, who was a witness for the prosecution, received a 40-year prison sentence and was later paroled. Carl Isaacs, considered the ringleader, was executed by lethal injection in 2003, thirty years after the heinous crimes were committed.
