In the summer of 2018, the life of 49-year-old Michael Ladon Charckon, a white male, was brought to a tragic and abrupt end in Donalsonville, Georgia. On the evening of July 25th, Charckon was fatally shot, succumbing to a gunshot wound that would leave a community in search of answers. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation, in conjunction with the Seminole County Sheriff’s Office, immediately launched a homicide investigation to piece together the events of that fateful night.
The investigation quickly led authorities to a person of interest. Just four days later, on July 29, 2018, 27-year-old Steve Maurice Register, Jr. was apprehended in the neighboring city of Bainbridge. His arrest was the culmination of a multi-county search, as law enforcement had been actively seeking him in connection with Charckon's death. Register was taken into custody and transported to the Seminole County Sheriff's Office to face serious charges.
Steve Maurice Register, Jr. was charged with felony murder for his alleged role in the death of Michael Ladon Charckon. In addition to the murder charge, he also faced three counts of aggravated assault. These additional charges stemmed from allegations that Register had also fired his weapon at other individuals who were present at the scene of the shooting off Highway 374.
