In the early hours of August 6, 2020, in the quiet community of Garfield, Kentucky, the life of 26-year-old Jacob Loeffler was tragically cut short. He and his roommate, 45-year-old Steven R. Gann, were found inside their trailer on Blackberry Circle Lane, both having suffered multiple gunshot wounds. The Breckinridge County Coroner pronounced both men deceased at the scene, marking the start of a double homicide investigation led by the Kentucky State Police.
The investigation quickly
pointed to a suspect, a man from Louisville. With the assistance of the Breckinridge County Sheriff's Office, detectives were able to track the suspect to an apartment complex on Ledgewood Parkway in Louisville. The Kentucky State Police's Special Response Team, along with the Louisville Metro Police Department's SWAT team, apprehended Robert L. Johnson, who was 28 at the time, without further incident. Johnson was initially charged with two counts of murder.
As the case proceeded through the legal system, details of the events that led to the fatal encounter began to emerge. It was revealed that the shooting occurred during a planned meeting for the sale of ecstasy pills. During the trial, a detective testified that items were missing from the victims' residence, introducing the possibility of a robbery-motivated crime.
In June 2022, a jury found Robert L. Johnson guilty, not of murder, but of lesser charges. For the death of Jacob Loeffler, he was convicted of first-degree manslaughter. For the death of Steven Gann, he was convicted of second-degree manslaughter. The jury recommended a total sentence of thirty years in prison for Johnson. In December 2023, the Kentucky Supreme Court affirmed the conviction and the thirty-year sentence, bringing a legal conclusion to the violent deaths of the two men.
