In the quiet community of Covington, Georgia, the life of 45-year-old Betty Mulbah McClain, an African American woman, was tragically cut short on the evening of April 1, 2014. Inside her home on Cinnamon Fern Circle, a violent domestic dispute ended in a fatal shooting that would not only claim her life but also forever alter the lives of the children present.
Betty was found to have suffered multiple gunshot wounds. The incident also left her 12-year-old daughter with a gunshot wound to the hand. Miraculously, a 3-year-old grandson who was also in the home at the time was physically unharmed.
The immediate suspect in the shooting was Betty's husband, 45-year-old Aaron Garsua McClain. He had fled the scene before law enforcement arrived. A 'Be on the Look Out' notice was issued, and his vehicle was later spotted by a state trooper in South Carolina. McClain was subsequently arrested and taken into custody.
Aaron McClain was charged with a litany of offenses, including malice murder, felony murder, two counts of aggravated assault, cruelty to children, and possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony. During his trial, prosecutors painted a grim picture of a marriage fraught with domestic abuse, revealing that the couple had only been married for three months before the fatal shooting. The defense argued that the shooting was an accident that occurred during a struggle over the firearm. However, the jury found him guilty on all counts. He was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole for the murder of his wife, with additional consecutive sentences for the assault on his stepdaughter and the firearm charges. The Georgia Supreme Court later upheld his convictions and sentence after an appeal.
