In the quiet town of Covington, Georgia, a distressing call to 911 on April 28, 2019, shattered the morning calm. Responding to a report of a penetrating trauma, Newton County Sheriff's deputies arrived at a home on Alcovy Way to a grim scene. Inside, in a back bedroom, they discovered the body of 57-year-old Andrea Walker, a female resident of the home.
She had sustained a fatal gunshot wound.
Initially, the investigation was guided by a harrowing narrative provided by Walker's own daughter, 34-year-old Carly Suzanne Walden. Walden, who lived with her mother, claimed that two unknown men had entered their home, attempted to sexually assault them both, and then shot her mother before fleeing. However, as investigators from the Newton County Sheriff's Office delved deeper into the case, inconsistencies in Walden's account began to surface, casting doubt on her story. The investigation soon pivoted, and the focus shifted from unknown assailants to the very person who had reported the crime.
Carly Walden was taken into custody at the scene without incident. The initial charges were felony murder and possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime. As the legal process unfolded, a more comprehensive list of charges was brought against her, including malice murder, felony murder, aggravated assault, possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony, possession of methamphetamine, and possession of amphetamine.
During her trial in April 2022, the prosecution laid out a case that dismantled Walden's fabricated story of a home invasion. A Newton County jury found Carly Suzanne Walden guilty on all counts. Subsequently, she was sentenced to life in prison with the possibility of parole after 30 years, with an additional 16 years to be served consecutively.
