On a tragic evening in Covington, Georgia, 27-year-old LaPeachah Nash, an African American woman, was fatally wounded in a shooting that stemmed from a domestic dispute. The incident unfolded on May 13, 2020, at the Fieldcrest Apartment Complex. Nash had driven Deshawn Grayson to the apartment of Dalanna Bailey, the mother of Grayson's child, to provide money for their one-year-old.
An argument erupted between Bailey and Grayson at her apartment door. While holding their young child, Bailey, who had a loaded handgun in her waistband, began yelling at Grayson. Fearing for his and the child's safety, Grayson attempted to take the weapon from her. Bailey then threatened him, stating she had a bullet in the chamber. As Grayson fled back towards Nash's vehicle, Bailey pursued him. While still holding the child, she fired at least three shots into the driver's side of the car.
One of the bullets struck Nash in the head, while Grayson sustained a gunshot wound to the back. Both were airlifted to Atlanta Medical Center, where Nash was pronounced brain dead on May 15 and succumbed to her injuries the following day. Following the shooting, Bailey fled the scene with her child. She was apprehended approximately seven hours later at a motel in DeKalb County.
Dalanna Bailey was subsequently arrested and faced multiple charges, including malice murder, felony murder, criminal attempt to commit murder, aggravated assault, possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony, and cruelty to children. Her trial commenced on February 5, 2024, and after less than an hour of deliberation, the jury returned a guilty verdict on all counts. Bailey's sentencing was scheduled for March 7, 2024.
