In the late summer of 2014, a Labor Day cookout in a Stone Mountain, Georgia neighborhood turned into a scene of tragedy. On the first of September, gunfire erupted from a passing vehicle on Scarborough Drive, striking two people who were enjoying the holiday festivities. Among the victims was Kardarius Collins, a 24-year-old Black male.
Collins was critically injured in the drive-by shooting and was rushed to Grady Hospital for medical attention.
Despite the efforts of medical professionals, he succumbed to his injuries the following day. A second victim, a 10-year-old girl, was also wounded in the spray of bullets. Fortunately, her injuries were not life-threatening, and she was expected to make a full recovery.
In the wake of the shooting, the family of Kardarius Collins was left to mourn the sudden and violent loss of their loved one. He was a father to two young children, a six-year-old daughter and a four-year-old son. As they grieved, his family expressed their hope that the person or persons responsible for his death would be brought to justice. At the time of the initial reports, no arrests had been made in connection with the fatal shooting. The investigation into the incident was ongoing as authorities sought to identify those in the vehicle and understand the motive behind the attack that cut a young man's life short.
