In the winter of 2015, a night of violence shattered the life of a family in a Forest Park, Georgia, apartment complex. On a Saturday evening in January, 33-year-old Florencia Gomez-Mendez, a carpenter and father of three, was walking back to his apartment with a friend when they were ambushed. The two were the victims of an armed robbery that would end in tragedy. During the attack, Gomez-Mendez was shot in the chest while his friend was struck in the back of the head and left unconscious.
Despite his grave injury, Gomez-Mendez managed to stumble away from his attackers but soon collapsed in the parking lot of the apartment building and died. The assailants, reported to be three in number, fled the scene and have not been apprehended in connection with the murder. The case remains unsolved, with no suspects publicly identified or arrested for the fatal shooting.
In the aftermath of the tragedy, the family of Florencia Gomez-Mendez sought recourse through the civil courts. They filed a lawsuit against the owners of the Bradford Ridge Apartments, alleging that inadequate security at the complex contributed to his death. The lawsuit highlighted a history of crime at the property. In a significant legal victory for the family, a Clayton County jury found the apartment owners liable and awarded the family $10 million in damages.
