In the early morning hours of December 14, 2022, a tragic series of events unfolded at a Motel 6 in Bay St. Louis, Mississippi, culminating in the death of 23-year-old male police officer Branden Estorffe. Officer Estorffe and his partner, Sergeant Steven Robin, were responding to a call for a welfare check on a woman and her child.
For about half an hour, the officers spoke with 43-year-old Amy Brogdon Anderson, who was sitting in a vehicle with her child. After the officers decided to call Child Protective Services, Anderson opened fire. Sergeant Robin, 34, was struck and killed instantly.
Despite being fatally wounded himself, Officer Estorffe managed to return fire, killing Anderson before he succumbed to his injuries. Initial reports were unclear as to how Anderson died, but investigators later confirmed that a round from Estorffe's service weapon was the cause of her death. Officer Estorffe's actions were hailed as heroic, as he stopped the threat before anyone else could be harmed.
Branden Estorffe had been with the Bay St. Louis Police Department for two years, following his dream of a career in law enforcement. He was a graduate of the Harrison County Law Enforcement Training Academy. The incident left the local community and law enforcement agencies mourning the loss of two of their own.
