In the early hours of a Wednesday morning in Duluth, Georgia, a gathering of friends turned into a scene of tragedy. Nineteen-year-old Shawn Anthony Lopes, a male, was with his friends at a home on Hailston Drive on March 29, 2017, when what was described as an accidental shooting occurred. The incident happened sometime after 1:30 a.m. Lopes was struck in the chest by a single bullet.
His friends rushed him to Gwinnett Medical Center in Lawrenceville, but the wound proved to be fatal, and he died later that afternoon. The police were called to the hospital to investigate the circumstances surrounding the shooting. What they uncovered was a story of a tragic miscalculation among friends.
The individual who fired the weapon was identified as 20-year-old Joseph Seung Min Park, a friend of Lopes. According to Park's account to the police, the shooting was a terrible accident. He reportedly removed the magazine from a gun and, under the mistaken belief that the weapon was completely unloaded, pointed it at Lopes and pulled the trigger. However, a single bullet had remained in the chamber, and it was this bullet that struck and killed the teenager.
Following the incident, Joseph Seung Min Park turned himself into the Duluth Police. He was subsequently arrested and booked into the Gwinnett County Detention Center. The authorities charged him with involuntary manslaughter, reckless conduct, and two weapons charges, reflecting the belief that the shooting was not intentional. An officer noted that if the act had been deemed deliberate, the charge would have been murder.
