In the late evening of Thursday, August 29, 2019, the life of 31-year-old Ivan Pastor-Vital of Doraville, Georgia, was cut short by gunfire. The Gwinnett County police were summoned to the InTown Suites on Steve Reynolds Boulevard in Duluth at approximately 9:15 p.m. following a report of a person being shot. Upon their arrival, officers discovered Pastor-Vital deceased on the third floor of the hotel.
According to witnesses at the scene, the sound of gunshots pierced the evening, and some individuals attempted to render aid to Pastor-Vital. The immediate aftermath of the shooting saw a flurry of activity, with four individuals reportedly seen fleeing the building before law enforcement arrived. This group, described as a Hispanic man and woman accompanied by two children, was observed carrying personal belongings as they made their way down Club Drive in the direction of Pleasant Hill Road.
Investigators with the Gwinnett County Police Department were able to identify the man and woman seen leaving the hotel; however, their level of involvement in the shooting remained unclear in the initial stages of the investigation, and no warrants for their arrest were immediately issued. Authorities also possessed information regarding the individual who had rented the room where the incident is believed to have taken place. In the days following the shooting, police publicly appealed for the individuals seen leaving the hotel to come forward and provide their account of the events that transpired that night.
