In what appeared to be a single-vehicle accident, the lives of two individuals were tragically cut short in Thomson, Georgia. On Tuesday, March 13, 2018, law enforcement responded to a crash scene on Sterling Wells Road. A vehicle had veered off the roadway and struck a tree. Inside, authorities discovered the bodies of 43-year-old Kenyetta Germany, a male, and Cheri Stone, 42.
Initially, the scene presented as a fatal car accident. However, as the investigation progressed, a more sinister narrative began to unfold. The bodies of Germany and Stone were transported to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation Crime Lab for autopsies. The results of these examinations shifted the case from a tragic accident to a double homicide investigation. The autopsies revealed that both Germany and Stone had sustained gunshot wounds, and their deaths were subsequently ruled as homicides.
The Georgia Bureau of Investigation, in conjunction with the McDuffie County Sheriff's Office and the Georgia State Patrol, launched a comprehensive investigation into the double homicide. Their efforts led to a significant breakthrough several months later. On August 20, 2018, authorities arrested 39-year-old Chet Kent of Thomson.
Kent was charged with two counts of murder in connection with the deaths of Kenyetta Germany and Cheri Stone. In addition to the murder charges, he also faced one count of possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. At the time of his arrest for the murders, Kent was already incarcerated in Thomas County, Georgia, on unrelated charges. He was subsequently transferred to the McDuffie County Jail to face the new charges.
