Edgar Lee Harris IV, 28, a Black male from Columbus, Georgia, died on July 7, 2019, after a shooting at the Wilson Apartments, also referred to in later coverage as Wilson Homes. Police were called there late on July 6 after reports of gunfire and found Harris with a fatal gunshot wound, turning what had begun as a summer night at the apartment complex into a homicide investigation that quickly drew the attention of Columbus detectives.
Early reporting described officers securing the scene while the case was handed to investigators, and in the days that followed his name became one more in the city’s long and painful roll of young men lost to gun violence.
As the investigation moved forward, detectives identified Deronte Kahlil Brown as the suspect and obtained a murder warrant. Brown was arrested on August 13, 2019, after authorities tracked him to Phenix City, Alabama. Reports said U.S. Marshals captured him there after months of searching, and he was later brought back to Columbus to face the case. That arrest gave the killing a shape it had lacked in the first chaotic hours, changing the story from an open-ended homicide to one centered on a named suspect and a motive investigators believed had been building before the shooting ever happened.
Later court coverage filled in more of what prosecutors said led to Harris’ death. According to that reporting, Harris and Brown had been in an ongoing dispute as neighbors at the apartment complex. Investigators said the conflict escalated when Harris struck Brown in the head with a baseball bat, sending Brown to the hospital. Prosecutors later portrayed the shooting as an act of revenge, saying surveillance video showed Brown hunting for Harris before the fatal encounter. Witness identifications from a photo lineup also became part of the case assembled against him.
The case did result in a conviction, though not on the original murder count. In 2023, Brown pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter rather than murder, and also pleaded guilty to possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. He was sentenced to 25 years, with 10 years to serve in prison and the balance on probation. As part of the plea agreement, the felony murder and aggravated assault charges were dropped. So while the case began with a man found shot to death at Wilson Apartments and months of uncertainty over whether the gunman would be caught, it ultimately closed in court with a negotiated plea that established criminal responsibility for Harris’ killing, even if it stopped short of a murder conviction.
