On the afternoon of Friday, May 17, 2024, the tranquility of the Avalon Apartments on Cusseta Road was shattered by the sound of gunfire. Police responded to a call about a shooting shortly after noon and discovered Raquise Walls inside an apartment in Building 5, suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. He was rushed to the Piedmont Columbus Regional emergency room, but his injuries were too severe. He was pronounced dead at 12:54 p.m.
The investigation into the homicide moved swiftly. Later that same day, Columbus police identified 19-year-old Jaylen Paige as a suspect in the fatal shooting. A warrant was issued for his arrest on charges of murder, armed robbery, and possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime. The search for Paige did not last long. By 5:25 p.m. that evening, he was taken into custody in Phenix City, Alabama, by the Columbus Police Department's Fugitive Unit with assistance from the Phenix City Police Department, bringing a swift, if somber, development to a day marked by violence and loss.
