In the late hours of February 18, 2023, a violent encounter at a Motel 6 in Columbus, Georgia, claimed the life of 19-year-old Michael Rochnet Carter Jr., a Black male. The tragic event also resulted in the death of his father, 54-year-old Michael Rochnet Carter Sr., who was found deceased at the scene alongside his son. Both men had sustained fatal gunshot wounds.
The violence extended further, leaving two other family members gravely injured.
Tonya Carter, 50, Michael Carter Sr.'s wife, and a 4-year-old toddler were also shot during the incident. While the young child survived, Tonya Carter succumbed to her injuries two weeks later in the hospital, raising the death toll to three.
The Columbus Police Department's investigation into the triple homicide led them to identify 19-year-old Jerimiah Walker as the primary suspect. It was later revealed in court that Walker had been friends with Michael Carter Jr. Warrants were issued for Walker's arrest on three counts of Felony Murder and two counts of Aggravated Assault.
Following the issuance of the warrants, a multi-agency effort was launched to locate and apprehend Walker. The U.S. Marshals Service, including the Southeast Regional Fugitive Task Force and the Two Rivers Violent Fugitive Task Force, tracked him to Memphis, Tennessee. On April 13, 2023, law enforcement surrounded a residence on Eldridge Avenue where Walker was hiding. After a brief attempt to escape through a side window, Walker surrendered to authorities and was taken into custody without further incident. He was then transported to the Shelby County Jail to await extradition back to Georgia. In a subsequent court appearance, Walker pleaded not guilty to the charges. Family members of the victims have expressed their desire for the death penalty in this case.
