On July 30th of that year, 36-year-old James D. 'JJ' Richardson Jr., a Black male, was fatally shot at the Bull Creek Apartments. The incident marked a tragic end to a life and the beginning of a prolonged legal process to bring his killer to justice.
The investigation into Richardson's death led authorities to Cyrus Howard
Sr. The motive and the specific circumstances that led to the deadly encounter were painstakingly pieced together by law enforcement. The evidence culminated in Howard's arrest and subsequent charge of murder in connection with Richardson's shooting.
During his trial in November 2022, startling details of the crime were revealed. In a dramatic cross-examination, Assistant District Attorney Veronica Hansis questioned Howard about the events of that fateful day. Howard admitted on the stand that he went to Richardson's home and shot him after Richardson opened the door. He described how Richardson attempted to flee inside his own home as he continued to fire his weapon. Howard followed him into the foyer and continued shooting until Richardson collapsed in his dining room. He recounted to the jury that he had 'emptied the gun,' firing until he ran out of bullets. Faced with the gravity of his actions, Howard acknowledged his understanding that shooting and killing James Richardson was a crime. Following the trial, Cyrus Howard Sr. was convicted for the murder of James Richardson Jr.
