On a summer evening in Columbus, Georgia, the life of 21-year-old Trenton Lamar Hill, a Black/African American male, came to a sudden and tragic end. The events of June 26, 2015, unfolded outside his home on Andrea Drive, where he was gathered with two friends, Jarrett Marshall and Jordan Day. An avid and knowledgeable car and gun enthusiast, Hill was showing his collection of firearms to his friends as they prepared to work on a car.
What began as a gathering of friends took a fatal
turn during what was described as playful taunting. As Hill and Marshall bantered, Marshall was handling a shotgun. The weapon discharged, striking Hill with birdshot in his hand, chest, and neck. The pellets broke his jaw and severed arteries in his neck, causing profuse bleeding. In the immediate aftermath of the shooting, a panicked Day loaded the critically injured Hill into his car and sped toward a local hospital, calling 911 along the way.
In their initial statements to the police, both Day and Marshall claimed that Hill had accidentally shot himself. This narrative quickly unraveled as investigators noted that the wounds could not have been self-inflicted. Day later amended his account after learning of Hill's death at the hospital. The investigation led to the arrest of Jarrett Marshall, who was subsequently charged with involuntary manslaughter in connection with his friend's death.
The case against Jarrett Marshall proceeded to trial in January 2018. During the proceedings, his defense attorney argued that the shooting was a tragic accident, emphasizing that Marshall was unfamiliar with firearms and believed the shotgun was unloaded. The prosecution contended that Marshall's actions constituted criminal negligence. Jurors heard testimony from Jordan Day, who recounted the jesting that preceded the fatal blast. A jury ultimately found Jarrett Marshall guilty of involuntary manslaughter. In February 2018, a judge sentenced him to 10 years in prison, with the requirement that he serve eight years, for his role in the death of Trenton Hill.
