A young life was tragically cut short on the evening of Friday, August 13, 2021, in Columbus, Georgia. Twelve-year-old Cortez Richardson, a male, was fatally wounded in a shooting that erupted near the intersection of Floyd Road and Luna Drive. He and his family were simply on their way home after having dinner when their vehicle was caught in the crossfire between two other cars, a white sedan and a white SUV. Cortez was a passenger in the back seat of his mother's vehicle when he was struck by the gunfire.

The Columbus Police Department's investigation led them to believe that the young boy and his family were unintended victims of a dispute between the occupants of the other two vehicles. In the wake of this senseless act of violence, the Federal Bureau of Investigation stepped in to assist local law enforcement, offering a significant reward for information that could lead to the identification and apprehension of those responsible for Cortez's death. A reward of $20,000 was announced for any information that would result in an arrest and indictment in the case.

Despite the efforts of law enforcement and the public appeal for information, the case of Cortez Richardson's death remains unsolved. To date, there have been no arrests announced in connection with the shooting, and no suspects have been publicly identified. The individuals in the white sedan and white SUV who were involved in the exchange of gunfire that claimed the life of an innocent child have not been brought to justice. The community is still urged to come forward with any information that may help close this tragic case and bring a measure of peace to a grieving family.
