In the summer of 2020, a young African American man's life was cut short in Statesboro, Georgia, during a domestic dispute that escalated to tragic violence. On the evening of June 17, 23-year-old James Edwin Henry was fatally shot on East Main Street. The incident unfolded when Henry attempted to intervene in an altercation between 40-year-old Rodricus Darnell Scott and his wife.
The conflict reportedly began after Scott confronted his wife over text messages he believed indicated
infidelity. When the argument turned physical, Henry stepped in to protect others present. It was at this moment that Scott, armed with a. 38-caliber revolver, fired a single shot that struck Henry in the neck and head area, resulting in his immediate death at the scene. The tragedy was compounded by the fact that an eight-year-old child witnessed the fatal shooting.
In the immediate aftermath, law enforcement was called to the residence just after 9 p.m. Responding officers found Henry deceased from the gunshot wound. Witnesses at the scene quickly identified Rodricus Scott as the shooter, and a detective en route to the scene spotted and apprehended him shortly after the incident.
Scott was taken into custody and subsequently faced a host of serious charges, including Felony Murder, Malice Murder, Aggravated Assault, Cruelty to Children in the First Degree, and Possession of a Firearm by a Convicted Felon. Following his arrest, the case proceeded through the legal system. In November 2020, a grand jury indicted Scott on these charges. After a two-day trial in September 2022, during which he represented himself, Rodricus Darnell Scott was convicted of felony murder, aggravated assault, and first-degree cruelty to children. The court sentenced him to life in prison without the possibility of parole.
