In a tragic incident that unfolded in Statesboro, Georgia, 23-year-old Antonio Sanchez, a male, was found deceased on the evening of Sunday, February 21, 2016. The discovery was made at the Aspen Heights Apartments after a concerned parent requested a welfare check. Responding officers from the Statesboro Police Department found the apartment secured from the inside and were compelled to force entry.
Once inside, they discovered Sanchez and a 23-year-old woman, Allison Fleet, both
suffering from gunshot wounds. Sanchez was pronounced dead at the scene, while Fleet, a recent graduate and employee of Georgia Southern University, was in critical condition and airlifted to a hospital in Savannah for medical treatment. It was later reported that she was released from the hospital. Sanchez was not a student at the university. It was determined that the two had been in the residence for approximately eight to ten hours before they were found.
The initial investigation led police to suspect the incident was a possible attempted murder-suicide, with no other individuals believed to be involved. This was due to the fact that both the front and rear doors of the apartment were locked from the inside. Further investigation by detectives confirmed this initial assessment, concluding that the event was indeed an attempted murder-suicide. The police determined that Sanchez shot Fleet, with whom he had been in a relationship for several years and was living with, before turning the gun on himself. The Bulloch County coroner ruled that Sanchez's death was the result of a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head. As the case was determined to be an attempted murder-suicide, there were no suspects sought and no arrests made. Sanchez's body was sent to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation crime lab for an autopsy.
