In the spring of 2020, the life of 49-year-old Kenneth Emanuel Smith was tragically cut short in what authorities described as a home invasion in Statesboro, Georgia. On March 27, Smith was found with a gunshot wound to his left torso in the parking lot of The George Apartments. Emergency services transported him to Memorial University Medical Center in Savannah, but he succumbed to his injuries a short time later.
The investigation into the shooting quickly led Statesboro police
detectives to execute a search warrant at The Hamptons Apartments on Rucker Lane. There, they uncovered evidence of an armed robbery that was allegedly connected to the shooting. This discovery, in turn, led them to identify a suspect in the case.
A few days later, on a Tuesday evening in North Georgia, United States Marshals apprehended Wanya Malik Anthony, a 24-year-old from Decatur. Anthony was subsequently charged with a string of serious offenses, including felony murder, aggravated assault, armed robbery, and possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime.
A search of Anthony's own apartment unearthed further evidence, leading to a host of additional pending charges. These included possession of marijuana with intent to distribute, as well as possession of several other controlled substances with intent to distribute, such as Adderall, Oxycodone, Hydromorphone, MDMA/Ecstasy, and Alprazolam. Two more counts of possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime were also added to the list of accusations against him. Following his arrest, Anthony was held without bond at the Bulloch County Jail to await further legal proceedings.
