On the night of Halloween in 2020, a sense of tragedy befell the Morris Heights Apartments on Morris Street in Statesboro, Georgia. It was there, at approximately 11:23 p.m. on October 31st, that 37-year-old Malcolm Jerome Steele, an African American male, was found suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. Emergency services were promptly dispatched to the scene, and Steele was rushed to the East Georgia Regional Medical Center. Despite the efforts of medical personnel, he succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead shortly after his arrival.
The Statesboro Police Department immediately launched an intensive homicide investigation, with detectives working through the night and into the following days to process the crime scene and pursue any available leads. The investigation soon pointed towards a targeted and violent act. Police Chief Mike Broadhead later described the shooting as a 'targeted assassination' and stated that the department was investigating the killing as being gang-related. Investigators believe that two gunmen approached Steele while he was outside his residence on the phone, shot him, and then fled the scene.
