In the early morning hours of Thanksgiving 2020, a night of socializing in downtown Macon, Georgia, turned into a scene of violence that claimed the life of 22-year-old Jhacaya Mann. The incident, which unfolded outside the Thirsty Turtle bar on Cherry Street, also left several others with gunshot and stab wounds.
The chaos reportedly began with a fight inside the bar.
Investigators stated that Durand Marcel Faulk, 29 at the time, was involved in this altercation and sustained a cut to his face. Following the fight, it is alleged that Faulk retrieved a firearm and opened fire into the crowd that had gathered outside the establishment, fatally wounding Mann. The shooting happened at approximately 2:45 a.m. on Friday, November 27, 2020. In total, the violent episode resulted in six people being shot and two others being stabbed.
In the days following the shooting, law enforcement made arrests in connection with the violence. On December 1, 2020, Bibb County sheriff's deputies apprehended Durand Marcel Faulk. He was subsequently charged with one count of murder and four counts of aggravated assault. A second suspect, 22-year-old Damion Jarrod Tuff, was arrested in February 2021 and also faced charges of murder and aggravated assault for his alleged involvement in the incident.
Despite the arrests, the legal proceedings against both men faced delays. As of November 2021, nearly a year after Jhacaya Mann's death, the Bibb County District Attorney's Office stated that neither Faulk nor Tuff had been indicted. The delay was attributed to backlogs at the Georgia Bureau of Investigation's crime lab.
