The incident was reportedly linked to gang affiliations, specifically with the Crips, although Phillip's mother emphasized that his favorite color was blue long before he became associated with the gang. The shooting was believed to have been triggered by an Instagram dispute, and Phillip was unarmed at the time of the attack.
Phillip's mother, Yolanda Murray-Barkley, expressed her grief and frustration over the senseless violence that claimed her son's life. She highlighted the challenges of keeping Phillip out of trouble and the influence of negative peer pressure. Yolanda also called for stricter gun control measures and better support programs for at-risk youth to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
