In the early morning hours of July 12, 2021, a domestic argument in Macon, Georgia, escalated into a fatal shooting, claiming the life of 38-year-old Tanesha Danielle Thomas. The female victim was shot in the torso at her home on Karen Drive and was later pronounced dead at a local hospital. The incident unfolded after Thomas and her boyfriend, Leonard Dewayne Holmes, returned from a club and began arguing.
The altercation became so heated that neighbors were prompted to call 911.
The investigation into Thomas's death quickly focused on her boyfriend, Leonard Dewayne Holmes. Initially, Holmes contacted 911 himself, claiming that Thomas had been the victim of a drive-by shooting. However, this narrative was contradicted by witnesses who reported seeing Holmes firing a handgun into the air. Further investigation revealed a volatile scene where Holmes had reportedly held Thomas on the ground. Thomas's daughter entered the room in an attempt to help her mother. At one point, Thomas armed herself with a handgun and ordered Holmes to leave the residence. The confrontation continued, culminating in Holmes fatally shooting Thomas as her daughter watched.
Leonard Dewayne Holmes was arrested and initially charged with murder, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, and other charges. In December 2025, just as his trial was about to begin, Holmes, then 34, pleaded guilty to the lesser charge of voluntary manslaughter, as well as aggravated assault and possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony. He was sentenced to 45 years, with the first 20 years to be served in prison, followed by 25 years of probation. The district attorney's office noted that Thomas's family, including her mother, supported the plea deal to spare Thomas's young daughter the trauma of testifying in court about the events that led to her mother's death.
