The life of Soraya Kiara Woodley, a 22-year-old woman from Macon, Georgia, was cut tragically short during the evening rush hour on a Monday afternoon. While her family and friends have been left to grieve, details about her life, her work, and the passions that defined her have not been shared publicly. Her death, however, was a public and violent event that left a community in shock and searching for answers.
The afternoon of October 19, 2026, was fading when the fatal encounter began.
At approximately 5:31 p.m., Soraya was in a silver sedan stopped at a traffic light at the busy intersection of Pio Nono Avenue and Hillcrest Avenue. According to a witness who spoke to local media, a young man emerged from the car and pulled Soraya from the driver's seat. A struggle ensued on the pavement before Soraya broke free and tried to run for her life. The man then fired a gun approximately four times, causing her to fall to the ground. The witness described the horrifying scene as the gunman then stood over her and fired about seven more shots.
Immediately after shooting Soraya, the man turned the gun on himself, inflicting what the Bibb County Sheriff’s Office would later describe as an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. Bystanders who witnessed the horrific event called 911, desperate to get help for the young woman. When deputies from the Bibb County Sheriff's Office arrived at the scene in the 800 block of Pio Nono Avenue, they found Soraya unresponsive with multiple gunshot wounds.
Emergency medical personnel and law enforcement flooded the intersection, blocking traffic between Hillcrest and Suwanee Avenues as they worked the scene. Despite the efforts of bystanders and first responders, Soraya’s injuries were too severe. Deputy Coroner Luann Stone pronounced her dead at the scene. Her family was notified of the devastating loss that same evening. The 21-year-old male suspect was transported to a local medical facility, where he was listed in stable condition.
The investigation into the killing was launched immediately by the Bibb County Sheriff’s Office. Investigators processed the scene for evidence, marking the locations of numerous shell casings that littered the roadway. Sergeant Christopher Williams of the sheriff's office noted that the incident appeared to have started inside the vehicle Soraya was driving. "Two people traveling down Pio Nono Avenue together in a vehicle, a silver sedan, and evidently this happened from an incident that happened inside," he told a local news outlet. "We're not sure exactly, but that's what we're working to determine."
In the days following the shooting, authorities did not publicly release the name of the hospitalized suspect or detail the relationship between him and Soraya. No specific criminal charges were immediately announced as the investigation continued. The community was left with many unanswered questions about what could have led to such a brutal and public act of violence. One bystander who stopped at the scene, a father himself, expressed the fear such an event brings, saying, "It does get close to home... to see stuff like this, it makes me think of them."
As of late October 2026, the investigation by the Bibb County Sheriff’s Office was described as active and ongoing. No further updates on the suspect's condition or on whether charges had been filed have been made public. Authorities have not released information regarding a motive. The case remains a painful and unresolved tragedy, leaving a family to mourn the loss of a young woman whose life was just beginning. Investigators have urged anyone with information regarding the incident to contact the Bibb County Sheriff’s Office at 478-751-7500 or Macon Regional Crimestoppers at 1-877-68CRIME.
