On a summer evening in Atlanta, what began as a gathering outside a local convenience store tragically turned into a scene of violence that would ultimately claim the life of 42-year-old Chicorley Vickers. On July 15, 2021, Mr. Vickers, along with 36-year-old Joshua Evans and a woman, were standing outside the Pick'n'Pay at the intersection of Joseph E. Boone Boulevard and Chappell Road.
Suddenly, a dark-colored sedan drove by, and an occupant within the vehicle opened fire on the group.
The sudden eruption of gunfire left a devastating toll. Joshua Evans was fatally wounded at the scene. Chicorley Vickers sustained critical injuries and was rushed to a nearby hospital for medical attention. The female companion was fortunate to escape with only a minor graze injury. Despite the efforts of medical personnel, Mr. Vickers succumbed to his injuries in August, turning the investigation into a double homicide.
In the months that followed the shooting, the Atlanta Police Department worked to identify those responsible for the senseless act of violence. Their investigation led to the identification of two suspects. Nineteen-year-old Antonio Waller was the first to be apprehended and charged with murder. Later, in October, a second suspect, 18-year-old Jontravious De'Anthony Arnold, was taken into custody. His arrest came after he was spotted in a stolen vehicle, leading to a police pursuit that ended in a crash. Arnold faced a litany of charges in connection with the double homicide, including two counts of murder, aggravated assault, and possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony.
