Oswald Bear departed from his parents' residence in Peguis First Nation, Manitoba on October 19, 1969 with the intention of harvesting wood in a nearby forest. Oswald was well-acquainted with the area and enjoyed the task of chopping wood. He had spent a considerable amount of time in the area and was intimately familiar with it.
