On a summer night in Atlanta, the life of 25-year-old Brandon Atkins, a Black male, was tragically cut short. On July 30, 2011, Atkins and another man, 36-year-old John Smith Jr., were found shot to death inside a house in the 3000 block of Waters Road in southeast Atlanta. The discovery was made in what authorities described at the time as an apparent home invasion.
The initial investigation into the double homicide left police with more questions than answers.
The motive behind the killings was not immediately clear, and law enforcement officials acknowledged the many unknowns surrounding the case. In the weeks following the murders, the Atlanta Police Department actively sought information from the public to help piece together the events of that fatal night.
In early September of 2011, about a month after the incident, police canvassed the Glenrose Heights neighborhood where the shooting occurred. Officers went door-to-door, distributing fliers with pictures of Atkins and Smith and appealing to residents for any details they might remember. A reward of up to $2,000 was offered for information that could lead to an arrest and conviction in the double homicide.
Despite these efforts, the case grew cold. There have been no public announcements of any arrests or the identification of any suspects in the years since the deaths of Brandon Atkins and John Smith Jr. The case remains an unsolved and painful chapter for their families and the Atlanta community.
