In the early evening of June 20, 2023, a burst of gunfire shattered the peace at the Heritage Station apartment complex in southwest Atlanta. When the chaos subsided, two young men were found fatally wounded. One of them was Mario Favors, a 15-year-old Black/African American male. He and 22-year-old Deonta Brown were sitting on the steps eating chips when a gunman opened fire.
A third individual was also wounded in the attack but survived.
Investigators from the Atlanta Police Department arrived at the scene on McDaniel Street shortly after 5:30 p.m. to find the tragic aftermath. Surveillance footage from the apartment complex captured a young man walking around the side of a building and shooting at the three victims. The police determined that the shooting appeared to be a targeted event. The investigation pointed toward a dispute over a stolen gun between the suspect and Mario Favors in the weeks leading up to the deadly encounter.
In the weeks following the shooting, authorities identified a suspect. On July 13, 2023, 18-year-old Shoun Nai Gene Bilal surrendered to the Fulton County Jail. He was subsequently charged with two counts of murder, two counts of aggravated assault, possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony, and possession of a machine gun. During a bond hearing, the prosecution alleged that Bilal ambushed the victims, firing approximately 15 rounds from a firearm that had been illegally modified with a switch. The defense, however, argued that it was Bilal who was ambushed and that he acted in self-defense. The case against Shoun Nai Gene Bilal is proceeding through the court system.
