In the early morning hours of December 29, 2022, in Atlanta, Georgia, the life of 24-year-old Fulton County Sheriff's Deputy James Thomas was cut short. Thomas, a male who had been with the sheriff's office for less than a year, was found deceased in the driver's seat of his wrecked Ford Fusion on Bolton Road. He had sustained a gunshot wound before the crash.
Originally from Mississippi, he had been recruited from the Milledgeville Police Department and was assigned to the detention unit at Grady Memorial Hospital.
The investigation into Thomas's death led Atlanta police to identify a suspect through the use of a truck driver's dash camera footage and the city's security camera network. On January 2, 2023, authorities arrested 26-year-old Alton Deshawn Oliver. Oliver was subsequently charged with murder, aggravated assault, and possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony. Investigators stated that Thomas and Oliver, who was on foot at the time of the incident, did not appear to know each other and that the shooting stemmed from some type of argument that escalated.
The case against Alton Oliver proceeded to trial, where a different narrative of the events leading to Thomas's death emerged. Oliver's defense team argued that he acted in self-defense. During his testimony, Oliver claimed that he was walking home from work when Thomas, driving his personal car, approached him multiple times making unwanted sexual advances. Oliver stated that he felt 'spooked' when Thomas drove up to him for a third time, at which point he pulled out a firearm and fired in Thomas's direction. He maintained that he was unaware at the time that he had struck Thomas.
Prosecutors contested this version of events, arguing that Oliver did not mention any sexual threats during his initial police interviews. They asserted that even if Thomas had solicited Oliver, it did not justify the use of deadly force. The trial lasted for approximately one week, with the jury deliberating for about a day. Ultimately, in August 2025, the jury found Alton Oliver not guilty on all counts, including the charge of murder.
