In the summer of 2018, a wave of violence swept through a northwest Atlanta neighborhood, leaving three people dead in a matter of hours. One of the victims was 17-year-old Trayvon T. Muhammad, a young man whose life was cut short by gunfire on the evening of July 12th. The shooting occurred at the Sierra Ridge apartments, a complex on Delmar Lane that had gained a reputation as a trouble spot. It was there that Trayvon was shot in the chest and leg.
He was rushed to a local hospital but ultimately succumbed to his injuries.
The hours following the shooting were tense, as two other fatal shootings took place in the same area of the city, though investigators did not believe the incidents were related. The community was left on edge by the sudden and brutal string of violence. Atlanta police quickly launched an investigation into Trayvon's death, and their efforts soon focused on a suspect.
The day after the shooting, authorities announced the arrest of 36-year-old Treymayne Smith. Investigators determined that a dispute between Smith and Trayvon had escalated to the point of gunfire. Smith, a convicted felon, was subsequently charged with murder and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. He was taken into custody and booked into the Fulton County Jail. While an arrest was made, the underlying cause of the dispute that led to the teenager's death was not publicly detailed by law enforcement.
