In the winter of 2016, a young man's life was tragically cut short over a dispute amounting to just $35. Gerald Daniels III, a 24-year-old male, was at his home in the Hidden Village Apartments in southwest Atlanta on February 17, 2016, engaged in a pastime familiar to many his age: playing video games. The normalcy of the evening was shattered by a fatal encounter that would end in his death.
Earlier that day, Jonathan Scott, a 40-year-old man, had visited Daniels' apartment to purchase
a small quantity of marijuana. A short time after the transaction, Scott returned, angry and claiming he had been shorted. In an attempt to resolve the conflict, Daniels reportedly re-weighed the marijuana in plain sight to demonstrate its accuracy. However, this act of clarification did not appease Scott. Instead, the situation escalated dramatically when Scott produced a gun and demanded more. When Daniels did not comply quickly enough, Scott opened fire, shooting him at least five times. He was struck by four bullets in the torso and one in the head, and was pronounced dead at the scene.
The brutal slaying was not without a witness. A 17-year-old who was in the apartment with Daniels at the time saw the entire event unfold. The following day, the teenager bravely reported what he had witnessed to a school resource officer, providing a crucial lead for investigators. This testimony, along with identifications from other witnesses who picked Scott out of a photo lineup, quickly led police to their suspect.
Jonathan Scott was subsequently arrested and faced a litany of charges for his actions on that fatal day. In April 2017, a Fulton County jury convicted him on charges including murder, felony murder, aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, burglary, criminal attempt to purchase marijuana, and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. Following the conviction, a judge sentenced Scott to life in prison without the possibility of parole, ensuring he would face the consequences of his violent actions. In September 2020, Scott's appeal of his convictions was denied, solidifying the verdict and his life sentence.
