Chryghonne Rainey, a 22-year-old Black male, was shot on the evening of October 8, 2022, at the Huebsch Laundry at 855 Oak Street SW in Atlanta’s West End. Atlanta police said officers were called there around 8:15 p.m. and found him suffering from a gunshot wound. He was rushed to the hospital in critical condition, but later died from those injuries, and later victim listings tied his death to the October 8 shooting at the laundromat.
In those first hours, police said they were looking for a woman seen wearing black pants and a black-and-red hoodie, a sketch of a suspect moving through the city while Rainey’s life was slipping away.
As more reporting surfaced, the case took on the shape of a deeply volatile relationship that had followed Rainey to Atlanta. Prosecutors later said Rainey and Kyla Lett had traveled from Ohio to Atlanta together, staying in a motel before the relationship ruptured. According to courtroom reporting, the breakup turned bitter after Rainey took Lett’s belongings from the motel room they had shared, and prosecutors presented that as the motive for the shooting. The state also described the relationship as toxic, and reporting on the trial said investigators used ride-share records and surveillance evidence to place Lett in metro Atlanta on the day Rainey was gunned down.
The suspect identified in online reporting was Kyla Lett, Rainey’s former girlfriend. Public incident summaries listed the case as a domestic-violence homicide and identified Lett as the suspect, noting that she was arrested. By the time the case reached trial, prosecutors were also confronting a complication that made the story even more tangled: Lett has a twin sister, Kayla Lett, and the state said it had to rule her out as the shooter before securing a conviction. That detail became important enough that Kayla testified, and prosecutors said they had to dismantle any suggestion that the wrong sister had been blamed.
The case eventually ended in a conviction. WSB-TV reported that Kyla Lett was convicted by a jury on March 28, 2025, for Rainey’s murder after prosecutors tied her to the killing through surveillance and location evidence. Another report on the trial said the judge imposed a sentence of life without parole plus five years.
