On a Friday evening in July 2021, a violent encounter at a Duluth-area apartment complex left one man dead and two others wounded. The deceased was identified as 38-year-old Omar Torres. The incident, which unfolded at The Falls at Gwinnett Place on Satellite Boulevard, was a triple shooting that also injured Jose Torres, 22, and Erick Torres, 27. When Gwinnett County police responded to the scene around 8:30 p.m., they discovered Omar Torres had succumbed to his injuries.
The investigation into the shooting quickly pointed to a suspect, 29-year-old Rene Martinez. Believed to be a domestic-related incident, the motive for the shooting was still under investigation as detectives worked to piece together the timeline of events that led to the deadly confrontation. Jose Torres was left in critical condition and required treatment in an intensive care unit, while Erick Torres was treated for his injuries and subsequently released from the hospital.
The day after the shooting, authorities received a tip that led them to another apartment complex in Duluth where Martinez was believed to be staying. A SWAT team was dispatched to the location to apprehend him. Upon entering the apartment, they found Martinez with what appeared to be a gunshot wound. He was taken to a local hospital for treatment. Martinez was subsequently arrested and charged with murder, aggravated assault, and possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony in connection with the death of Omar Torres and the injuries to the other two victims.
