In the fading daylight of October 30, 2019, a tragic incident unfolded in a Duluth, Georgia, apartment that would claim the life of 13-year-old Jair Gonzalez. A Hispanic male, Jair was at his home in the Portico Apartments on Preston Park Drive with a 14-year-old friend when their afternoon took a devastating turn. The two boys, both students at Duluth Middle School, were playing with a gun they had found inside the residence.
While handling the firearm, and reportedly while on a FaceTime call with another friend, the gun discharged, striking Jair. The call for help went out around 5:30 p.m., and when Gwinnett County police officers arrived, they found the young teen bleeding heavily from a gunshot wound. Emergency services rushed him to a nearby hospital, but his injuries proved to be fatal, and he died shortly after arrival.
