On a late Monday night in Duluth, Georgia, the life of 52-year-old Andrew Shin was tragically cut short in a violent confrontation. It was June 20, 2016, and Shin, a male, and his wife, Soyoun Ahn, were closing up their business, Time Internet Cafe, for the night. As they were leaving, they were accosted by a man in a white mask and dark-colored hoodie who brandished a handgun and demanded money.
The armed assailant, later identified as 22-year-old Diante Doby of Snellville, was intent on robbing the couple. However, the situation escalated dramatically when Shin, in an effort to protect himself and his wife, drew his own handgun. A shootout erupted between the two men. In the exchange of gunfire, both Shin and Doby were fatally wounded. Ahn, who had taken cover behind a vehicle, was not injured. Shin collapsed and died in front of his business.
After being shot, Doby managed to get into a dark-colored passenger car driven by his accomplice, 22-year-old Kendra Yvonne Gates of Stone Mountain. Gates drove from the scene to a nearby McDonald's parking lot and called 911 to report that her boyfriend had been shot. Emergency services arrived to find Doby deceased.
Law enforcement officials investigating the interconnected scenes quickly pieced together the events of the tragic night. Kendra Yvonne Gates was taken into custody and subsequently charged with armed robbery for her role in the attempted heist that resulted in two deaths.
